Letter J — The Jumping, Descending Letter
J combines two challenges: a descending hook below the baseline and a dot above the body. This free printable Letter J tracing worksheet helps children aged 4+ navigate both forms. Uppercase J curves downward from a horizontal top stroke. Lowercase j is essentially a descending i — adding a below-baseline hook to the dotted vertical. This dual challenge makes J one of the more demanding early letters.
Managing Two Special Features at Once
Lowercase j is the only letter that both descends below the baseline AND has a dot. Teaching children to form the vertical-plus-hook first, then add the dot, instills the methodical approach needed for all multi-step letters. The descending hook also introduces the leftward curve at the bottom — a movement that reappears in the descending letters g, p, and y.
