Letter G — Introducing the Descender
G brings one of handwriting's most important concepts: the descender — a letter tail that drops below the baseline. This free printable Letter G tracing worksheet helps children aged 4+ master both forms. Uppercase G is C plus a horizontal shelf. Lowercase g uses a circle followed by a descending loop, teaching children that some letters need space below the writing line.
The Descender Concept
Only five lowercase letters descend below the baseline: g, j, p, q, and y. Understanding this concept early prevents the common problem of all letters floating at the same level. This worksheet shows the descender zone clearly, teaching children to allocate proper vertical space. The lowercase g's descending loop also introduces the cursive-like motion that prepares for connected writing.
